The National Institute of Design or NID is a multidisciplinary design institute of international repute. This is one of the premier organizations in the field of design education and research with international recognition. It is also enlisted as one of the top design schools among the 25 European and Asian programs by The Business Week, USA.


This functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and Government of India and also recognized by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.   

    

The graduates of NID are working successfully around the world in the main sectors of business, trade, and social improvement. The courses are designed such that it helps in bagging a prestigious job and also to start entrepreneurship.

NID Courses and Admission 

NID is open for both the Indian and foreign candidates. There are separate seats for the two categories. NID offers four kinds of study programs, Bachelor in Design (B.Des), Masters in Design (M.Des), Ph.D. in Design, and Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD).


To get admitted to this premier institute, you have to follow the NID Admission Procedure. There are two stages of examinations, stage 1 is the Preliminary exam, and stage 2 is the Main exam. Only those who will qualify the Prelims will appear in the Mains. Finally, those qualify in the Mains will be allotted seats through counseling.

Details of NID Admission Procedure

For the bachelor's program, B.Des and GDPD, you have to either pass or appear 10+2 or equivalent.

Stage 1: Design Aptitude Test (DAT), Prelims is conducted at various test centers across the country. Take note that appearing in the DAT or being shortlisted for the next level of NID Admission Procedure does not confirm admission to any of the NIDs.


This test will be of 3 hours duration and will have 100 marks. They will conduct the test at all the centers on the same date and time.


Stage 2: Applicants who will qualify stage 1 will be invited to appear for the DAT Mains as a mandatory part of the NID Admission Procedure in the main campus Ahmedabad or other campuses situated in Karnataka, Haryana, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh. You will get to know about the test center in the DAT (Mains) Admit Card.


The Mains will also be of 100 marks, and it will take a maximum of 3 days to complete as it consists of various formats as in-studio setup. Both tests will be conducted in the English language only.

The candidates should furnish correct information at every field in the application form. If at any stage of admission, the institute finds any of the information is wrong, they will reject the candidature.

The National Institute of Design, popularly known as NID, is a renowned multidisciplinary design school in India. Its premises were initially situated in Gandhinagar, Gujarat and Bangalore, Karnataka. But the branches of the institute have spread over time in various parts of India. Now you will also see them in Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), and Kurukshetra (Haryana), as well as Jorhat (Assam).


Although it is registered as an autonomous body under Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, the Government of India, it is also recognized as an organization of scientific and industrial design research by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.


This internationally acclaimed design institute is a pioneer in industrial design education. Its design excellence is appreciated across the globe and thus made the Indian designs international, in true sense.

Study Programs offered by NID

 It offers four study programs. Bachelor of Design (B.Des), Master of Design (M.Des), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Design and Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD).

Necessary criteria for NID admission for B.Des and GDPD

All the applicants for B. Des and GDPD should fulfill some criteria for NID Admission.

  • Age limit

The Indian nationals from the General category and General EWS category of maximum age 20 years as on the date mentioned in the form are only eligible to apply. The reserved category OBC, SC, and ST will get 3 years, and the persons with disabilities will get 5 years of age relaxation for NID Admission.

Foreign Nationals can also apply for admission to this premier design institute of India under the Overseas Category. In that case, the age limit will be 20 years.

  • Educational Qualifications

Any boy or girl from India in any branch of study (Humanities, or Science or Commerce, etc.). They should have passed or appeared for (10+2) or H. S. Exam and from any state or central board recognized by Govt of India, such as CBSE, ICSE or their equivalents are eligible to apply for NID Admission.

  • Educational qualifications for Overseas Category

Candidates holding citizenship other than the Republic of India can apply for the study programs under Overseas Category (supernumerary). Furthermore, they have to fulfill the eligibility criteria mentioned in the Admission Handbook of the corresponding session.

  • Seat availability
  1. For overseas candidates, an additional 15% seat is available apart from the seats of Indian citizens. Non-Indian applicants need to pay fees as per the overseas fee structure, which is different from the national candidates.
  2. OCI and PIO cardholders have to apply only under the supernumerary or overseas category.
  3. Non-Resident Indians with Indian passport have to apply as Indian Nationals.
  4. To confirm admission after the successful completion of all the previous stages, the overseas candidates must visit the corresponding NID campus in person and produce certain documents and fulfill other essential criteria.

Fill In the NID Admission Form Carefully

National Institute of Design is a renowned Ahmedabad based design school. It is a Government of India recognized institute with international exposure. In addition to the regular seats, 15% more seats are reserved for the overseas candidates.     

 

 The first step for taking admission to the National Institute of Design is to fill in the NID Application Form. The candidates have to visit the official website of NID to know the details for applying for the undergraduate, postgraduate, graduate diploma and PhD courses. The eligibility criteria consist of educational qualification, age, nationality, knowledge and inclination towards the intended study program.   

Steps for applying for the programs

  1. All the candidates have to register online before they begin to fill the NID Application Form. Visit the official website of NID and go to the admission page. While registering, you need to provide a valid email-id and an active mobile number.
  2. Remember these will be used in future for communications. Therefore, keep the mobile, password and user id handy. After the registration, the login credentials will be sent via the email id you provided. If you commit any mistake and the registration is done with wrong email / mobile, you have to register again with correct information. Be extra careful to avoid any such mistake and speed up the application process.
  3. Log in with the data provided by the NID website and proceed to the next step, i.e. filling the NID Application Form. Provide all the details, check twice or thrice with full attention.
  4. Then click on ‘Save and Proceed’ to move on to the next step of the application. Upload the required documents (proof of qualification, caste, age, address, etc.), signature, and photo as asked by the authority.
  5. You can click on the ‘Save & Exit’ button to complete the rest of the form at a later date and time. The application you filled in so far will be saved in the website server.
  6. Next comes the application fees section. Pay online choosing any of links of the payment gateway provided in the form. Finally, click on the ‘Submit’ button to save all the documents on the website.  
  7. Non- Indian nationals must fill the last page containing the passport details along with other information.
